Teleworking

Up to now managers' still have a mistrust & fear of letting staffs work from home. Primitive and costly technology and slow network connection were reasonable arguments to discourage telecommuting. But the real reasons they are saying no are:

1. If one person is allowed to work from home, every employee will demand the same right and there will be no one left in the office.

2. Managers will not be able to control employees.

3. Management of team perceptions as others may see this as an unfair advantage rather than a legitimate and productive working arrangement.

Thanks to broadband, better web based collaboration tools and higher cost of fuel, many companies are changing their minds. Voice over IP can also allow phone calls to be taken anywhere. With staff shortages and women having children, working from home can supply additional resources and reduce office space requirements.

Pioneers in telecommuting are companies like Citibank and NSW Roads and Traffic Authority.

The Australian Telework Advisory Committee (ATAC) presented its report to Government on Monday 27 February 2006, entitled 'Telework for Australian Employees and Businesses - Maximising the economic and social benefits of flexible working practices'
